Created in 1996, 72" high x 16' wide x 24" deep
Created as an experiment for structural integrity. I had been having some issues with works I had created breaking apart at the weakest points and I wanted to find a method to solve this problem. I took a 6' long 1/2" threaded rod and twisted it into an arbitrary configuration. I then cut 1/2" 3-ply plywood discs starting at the bottom end with the largest and gradually reducing to the smallest disc at the top of the rod. The entire gluing operation was one session in which all discs were glued, positioned and stacked. Large washers and bolts were used at each end of the glued stack of disks and tightened so that the discs were compressed against each other during the glue drying process. A base and cap was added after drying and the entire form then sanded and finished.
