Created in 1988, 1st of MaleNudeWorks, 39"w x 32"h
Originally the top half of a full-size 6 foot tall man. It was the first purely sculptural work I created using the laminating technique after making a couple of furniture items for my house. When I realized that there really weren't any limitations on what form could be made using lamination, one of the first things I did was to make a life-size human figure. I used myself as the model with some exaggerations here and there. Constructed of alternating layers of 1/4" and 1/2" MDF (medium density fiberboard) with sanded finish.
In early 1989, I had placed "Image of Man" in a gallery showing in downtown San Francisco and when moving him out of the show, he broke into pieces at the waist. This was my first big lesson of using the laminating technique--structural integrity. Forms will break at the weakest points if not properly reinforced. The work that is presently offered for sale is the top half. The bottom half may be incorporated into a future work. The whole work is shown below.
