Totem Pole

E-mail Print PDF

"Totem Pole" was finished and sold in 2004.  It is formed from a single piece of 8" x 12" douglas fir 8 feet long that was left over from a construction project.  A local contractor who knew that I worked in wood dropped it off at my studio one day and I studied the piece of wood with it's grains and cracks for months before I cut into it.  When I started, I had no preconception of what the final form would be.  I just started seeing what the lines of wood grains would do as I cut into the block at different spots.  The form emerged slowly over a period of many months until it reached the figure shown here.
